Music is a language native to the human heart. One needs only to hear the angelic tones of Nana Mouskouri to affirm this. Her unique and powerful sound has been described as feminine and strong, exhilarating and calming...more than anything, the word "beautiful" has been used. Whether you hear her singing in Greek, German, French, Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, Spanish, Hebrew or any of the other languages she has used so skillfully to share her gift, you may agree with me that Nana Mouskouri has mastered the language of music.
According to the music website allmusic.com, Nana Mouskouri is the biggest selling female vocalist of all time. I think you will agree, the story and case of Nana Mouskouri is a unique one. She speaks and sings in several languages. She's recorded songs in Greek, French, English, Spanish, Italian, German, Dutch, Portuguese, Hebrew, Welsh, Mandarin, and Turkish, just to name a few. Nana Mouskouri has fans throughout Europe, Asia and the Americas. She has recorded approximately 450 albums and an astonishing 2,000 songs making one of, if not the most prolific recording artists in the world. Nana Mouskouri sings in many genres from jazz, French cabaret songs, songs heard in motion picture soundtracks, classical and operatic pieces, religious and gospel hymns, pop tunes, folk songs from her native Greece, and other genres. A very humble woman, when asked how many albums she has sold globally, Nana Mouskouri has said "around 200 million," while some journalists believe the number to be well over 300 million copies worldwide. Nana Mouskouri's voice has been an international sensation for over 50 years. It is with great pleasure we welcome her on The Paul Leslie Hour.
On this episode we celebrate over 9 years since the first broadcast. Our special guest is a folksinger, songwriter, banjoist, recording artist and legend --Pete Seeger. Born in 1919, Pete Seeger met and performed with folksinger Woody Guthrie in 1940. Soon, Pete Seeger was inspired to write his own songs. In 1948, Pete Seeger formed the folk group The Weavers and the group sold 4 million record copies. They helped popularize Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land," into the beloved song we know today. They recorded a version of Leadbelly's "Good Night Irene" that topped the chart for six months.
When the folk boom of the early sixties took place, groups like The Kingston Trio, the Byrds and Peter, Paul and Mary had hits with Pete Seeger songs like "If I Had a Hammer," "Where Have All the Flowers Gone?" and "Turn, Turn, Turn." Pete Seeger has definitely made his mark on the world. He has earned a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, a Harvard Arts Medal, the Kennedy Center Award, The Presidential Medal of the Arts, Two Grammys, and membership in both the Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Many would say that Pete Seeger is arguably the most important living American folk musician. He continues to record and perform occasionally. Throughout his 70 year career he has recorded dozens of albums and influenced everyone from Don McLean to Bruce Springsteen. His songs have been recorded and performed by everyone from Harry Belafonte, Joan Baez, Roy Orbison, Bobby Darin, Dolly Parton, Judy Collins, Johnny Rivers, and hundreds of others. It is an extreme honor to present an interview with Pete Seeger along with musical selections.
Michael Shnayerson is a journalist and a longtime contributor to Vanity Fair magazine. Shnayerson has written several books, including the recent book with Harry Belafonte: MY SONG, A Memoir. MY SONG tells the story of Harry Belafonte, called one of the greatest entertainers of our time. MY SONG takes the reader from Belafonte's early days as a child growing up in Harlem and Jamaica, to his careers in acting and music. However, MY SONG is about more than Harry Belafonte the singer. Harry Belafonte was the first recording artist in history to sell one million copies of an album. MY SONG is also about Harry Belafonte the activist and Humanitarian. Harry Belafonte is an important figure in the American Civil Rights Movement, but Belafonte's passion has extended beyond the borders of the United States. Belafonte has been involved in political, social and Humanitarian causes around the world. Adrienne Anderson received Grammy nominations for her lyrics for Dionne Warwick’s hit Dèjá Vu as well as Peter Allen’s hit "I go To Rio," both of which would be covered by other artists. However, Adrienne Anderson is perhaps most known for the songs she co-wrote with Barry Manilow. Her songs have been appearing on Manilow's records since the very first album: Barry Manilow I in 1973 and have continued to the most recent album 15 Minutes. In fact, the very first release of Barry Manilow (under the name Featherbed) was of "Amy," a song Adrienne Anderson composed and wrote the lyrics for.

Adrienne Anderson is a true artist. Adrienne Anderson wrote the lyrics to two of Manilow's most beloved classic songs: "Could It Be Magic," and "Daybreak."

We invite you to listen in as we share the story and music written by a woman whose creativity and drive has never stopped!
Paul Lesliehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06364238181977682271noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7151319992963813667.post-10428067945740449582011-09-04T23:31:00.000-07:002011-09-04T23:35:55.927-07:00Master Class with Marty Panzer (Writing Lyrics that Succeed and Endure)Hello folks!

A lot of people wrote to me over the past couple of months expressing an interest in lyricists after our interviews with Enoch Anderson and Marty Panzer. A few wrote to say they were lyricists or interested in the art of lyric writing. As promised, we will be featuring more interviews with lyricists in the near future, but in the mean time I wanted to share with you some news regarding Marty Panzer.

I just heard from Marty Panzer that his lyric master class is coming to New York City. He has been doing the workshop for 17 years now at UCLA, but now those of us on the East Coast will have an opportunity to attend. I have included a link for more information: http://martypanzermasterclass.eventbrite.com/

The class sounds very fascinating to me. I imagine anyone who is fascinated by song lyrics or wants to learn how to be a better songwriter would not want to miss the class!
